Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Bronze headstones — typically a cast bronze plaque mounted on a granite base — are governed by the same cemetery regulations that apply to all memorial markers in New Jersey. Permitted dimensions, base requirements, and installation methods are set independently by each institution. Some cemeteries, particularly lawn-maintenance parks, require flush-mounted bronze plaques with no protruding edges; others accept raised-relief plaques on upright granite bases. Bronze Memorials reviews the regulations of your cemetery before production begins, ensuring that the bronze plaque dimensions, mounting configuration, and granite base height all comply with the institution's current rules.

Foundation Requirements

Bronze headstones mounted on granite bases require foundations appropriate to the weight and height of the combined piece. For flush-mounted bronze plaques on flat granite bases, many New Jersey cemeteries require a concrete footing poured to a standard depth below frost line. For upright granite bases carrying a mounted bronze plaque, foundation depth specifications typically match those for standard upright granite monuments — ranging from 12 to 24 inches depending on the cemetery's rules and the combined monument height. Our installation crew handles all foundation work to the receiving cemetery's specification.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Bronze is universally accepted in faith-based cemeteries throughout New Jersey, making it a reliable material choice for families in Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and other religious traditions. Many faith cemeteries in Morris County, Bergen County, and Essex County have historically specified bronze plaques for their flat-marker sections, and the material's neutrality in terms of religious iconography makes it flexible across denominations. Families choosing bronze for a faith monument can incorporate crosses, Stars of David, praying hands, and other denominational symbols as cast-relief elements in the plaque design, with the cemetery's prior approval if required.

Headstone

A bronze headstone typically consists of a cast bronze plaque mounted on a granite base — a combination that marries the warmth and aged character of metal with the structural permanence of stone. The bronze portion carries the primary inscription: name, dates, and any epitaph, rendered in raised relief lettering that casts a shadow as the light changes throughout the day. Decorative borders — floral, geometric, or architectural — and religious or personal symbols are also cast in relief rather than engraved, giving the finished plaque a tactile quality that flat-surface markers cannot match. The granite base may be finished in black, gray, mahogany, or other colors available in American-made stone, complementing the bronze's natural brown-gold tone. Over years of outdoor exposure, bronze develops a natural patina — a deepening greenish-brown oxidation layer — that many families find beautiful and that protects the underlying metal. Bronze headstones are available in upright, slant, and flat configurations, each appropriate to different cemetery contexts throughout New Jersey.

Bronze Options

Bronze Memorials sources American-made bronze alloy formulated specifically for outdoor memorial applications — a composition that balances castability, detail retention, and long-term corrosion resistance. The bronze is cast in molds produced from your approved design, ensuring that every letter, every decorative element, and every symbol appears exactly as drawn. Standard plaque finishes include natural brown, which ages gracefully to a traditional dark bronze tone, and statuary bronze, which has a slightly lighter, more golden initial appearance. The granite base component is selected from the same American-made stone inventory we use for all Bronze Memorials monuments. Most families pair black or dark gray granite with bronze for maximum visual contrast, though mahogany and gray granites also complement the metal's warm tones effectively.

Custom Design Process

Designing a bronze headstone at Bronze Memorials begins with your family's story and ends with a monument that tells it accurately. Consultations are available in English, Russian, and Polish, at our Morris County showroom or by telephone. Our design team translates your preferences — lettering style, border design, symbols, portrait if desired, and base configuration — into a scaled drawing that shows every element in exact proportion. You approve this drawing before the bronze casting mold is produced. The casting process is then coordinated by our workshop, and the finished plaque is inspected for casting quality, lettering clarity, and surface treatment before being mounted on the granite base. Installation is coordinated directly with your cemetery.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

A bronze headstone at Bronze Memorials passes through six defined stages between your first call and the installed monument at your cemetery. Step one is the family consultation: we gather every detail — the name and dates, preferred plaque dimensions and base height, lettering style, decorative elements, and any symbols or portrait work to be incorporated. Step two is the design drawing: our team produces a scaled layout showing every element in its correct position, which you review and approve in writing before production begins. Step three is mold fabrication: the approved design is used to produce the casting pattern from which the bronze plaque will be cast — a precision step that determines the quality of every raised-relief letter and decorative element. Step four is casting and hand-finishing: the bronze is poured, cooled, and extracted; our artisans then hand-finish every surface, sharpening letters, cleaning relief elements, and applying the specified surface treatment. Step five is mounting and inspection: the finished plaque is set on the prepared granite base, secured with industrial adhesive and mechanical anchors, and inspected against the approved drawing. Step six is installation: the assembled monument is delivered to your cemetery, placed on a prepared foundation by our crew, leveled, and photographed for your records.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“My father served in the Army and spent his life with quiet dignity. We wanted a memorial that matched that. The bronze headstone Bronze Memorials made — his name and service branch raised in metal against a dark granite base — is exactly right. It says everything without saying too much.” — James, Morris County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a headstones?

Bronze headstones typically take ten to fourteen weeks from consultation to installation — slightly longer than granite-only monuments because the bronze casting step requires additional lead time. We provide a production schedule at the start of your order so you understand each phase and its timing.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Bronze Memorials places bronze headstones in cemeteries throughout all 14 New Jersey counties. Our installation crews travel to Morris, Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean counties on a regular basis. We coordinate with each cemetery's monument office for every installation.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Every bronze headstone we produce is designed to meet the specific regulations of the receiving cemetery. We review the cemetery's current rulebook before production begins. Bronze is accepted in virtually all New Jersey cemeteries, but specific mounting configurations and base dimensions are confirmed for every order.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Families frequently bring photographs for portrait reproductions, religious imagery, military insignia, or personal symbols. All of these can be incorporated as cast-relief elements in your bronze plaque. Our design team produces a scaled drawing for your approval before any casting mold is produced.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Bronze companion headstones — designed for two individuals on a shared base — are among our most frequently produced designs. For veterans, we incorporate military branch emblems, service dates, and rank in cast relief. We are knowledgeable about VA burial benefits and can advise on how private bronze monuments coordinate with government-furnished markers.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
